China's criteria for those who wish to adopt:
Chinese officials make their own eligibility requirements for those who wish to adopt. Prospective Singles please also see the Qualifications for Single Adopters.
To determine if you can adopt from China see if you can answer "Yes" to each of the following questions:
1. Are you a married, heterosexual couple or a single heterosexual woman?
2. Will both of you be at least 30 years old before your paperwork arrives in China?
3. Will both of you be less than 56 years old when the adoption is completed? (Couples wishing to adopt older children or children with a more significant special needs will be considered up to age 60.)
4. Have you been married at least 2 years? (when your paperwork arrives in China.)
5. If either of you was previously divorced, have you been married to your current spouse for at least 5 years? (before your paperwork arrives in China.)
6. Are both of you physically and mentally healthy? With a normal life expectancy and able to care for a child?
7. Do both of you have a Body Mass Index score below 40? For help with calculating Body Mass Index click HERE.
8. Are both of you free from cancer and all psychotropic drugs? (Exceptions are often made for someone who had cancer in the past, but is totally free from cancer in the present. If psychotropic drugs were taken previously, a doctor will need to explain why and whether you are now symptom free.)
9. Are your combined annual incomes greater than $40,000 if you are childless?
10. If you have children, are your combined annual incomes greater than $30,000 plus $10,000 for each child at home (including the one to be adopted)?
11. Is your net worth greater than $80,000?
12. Do both of you have at least a high school diploma or GED?
13. Are both of you free from any criminal record?
Please note that the Chinese officials are often somewhat flexible with families adopting children with special needs, so contact us for help if you don't meet all of the above qualifications. We can confidentially discuss your specific situation with the CCAA to see if they will make an exception for you.
